The Muppets and Disney!

It’s time to play the music; it’s time to light the lights! Who doesn’t love the Muppets? They’re zany, they’re fun, and they’ve been the subject of various memes recently making the rounds on the Internet! Ask around; just about everybody has a favourite Muppet (and mine’s Scooter)!

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that this wacky bunch of puppets were not originally Disney characters, seeing that both brands stand for the same things: the importance of friends and family, love, laughter, and magic.

In 1990, to celebrate the merge of the Muppets and the Walt Disney Company, a TV special called The Muppets at Walt Disney World aired, in which, of course, the Muppets went to Disney World!

Occasionally this video resurfaces on YouTube, and if you’re lucky enough to find it, I highly recommend it! It’s fun to see how the parks have changed since 1990 as well as to see how the Muppets interact with the attractions and such! (Brief clip here)

The Muppets have been in the Disney family and the Parks for quite some time now, and their presence is ever growing.

Pizza Planet, in Muppets Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, has just recently reopened as Rizzo the rat’s family restaurant, PizzeRizzo! (Not to mention the theming of the nearby bathrooms to match Gonzo’s Royal Flush from the 2011 movie, The Muppets!)

If you grab a bite to eat here, keep your eyes peeled (ouch!) for Muppety “Easter eggs” throughout the restaurant! You may be surprised by what you find!

The first Muppety attraction was Muppet*Vision 3D, which still remains today in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and used to play in Disney California Adventure as well.

From Statler and Waldorf heckling the Muppets from their balcony seats, to Sweetums walking across the front of the stage, guests really feel like they’re in the actual Muppet Theatre!

If you’re a Muppet super-fan like me, it’s a very exciting experience. Once inside the theatre, Kermit treats you to a tour, which then turns into a show. A fun, fantastic show!
(Side note: For a while, the pre-show to Muppet*Vision 3D was “interrupted” by Constantine from Muppets Most Wanted, but as of November 11, 2016, the original pre-show has returned!)

Remember the water fountain in the middle of Muppets Courtyard, the one with Miss Piggy dressed as the Statue of Liberty? While pipes are rerouted for the expansion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the fountain has been turned into a planter.

It’s still very pretty, but I’m looking forward to when the expansion is complete and it returns to being a water fountain!

In the meantime, there’s plenty of Muppet things to enjoy! Just a few weeks ago, the Muppets opened the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with a “Macy’s” version of their classic song, ‘Hey A Movie!’ from The Great Muppet Caper! It was nothing less than perfect in the opinion of this writer.

There is also a brand new show that debuted a few months ago in Liberty Square, called The Muppets Present Great Moments in American History! In this short outdoor show, the Muppets reenact different historical events and bring you right into the middle of the action!
